Kim Jae-yeol elected president of the International Skating Federation… non-European first

International Skating Union (ISU) Executive Committee member Kim Jae-yeol became the first non-European to be elected president of the International Skating Federation.

The new president Kim was elected as the president of the International Skating Federation at the 58th International Skating Federation regular general meeting held in Phuket, Thailand on the 10th (Korean time). He serves a four-year term.

It is the first time that a non-European person has been appointed president of the International Skating Federation since its establishment in 1892. The International Skating Federation oversees the core sports of the Winter Olympics, such as figure skating, speed skating and short track skating.

Chairman Kim is the husband of Samsung Welfare Foundation Chairman Lee Seo-hyun, the second daughter of the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee. He served as president of the Korea Ice Skating Federation from 2011 to 2016, and also served as vice-chairman of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Organizing Committee. He served as Executive Member of the International Skating Federation since 2016.

Chairman Kim said, “Sports has the power to connect the world as one, transcending borders and races. We will deliver a message of hope, encouragement, and success to countries around the world that have been neglected in winter sports, while contributing to and serving the development of international sports.”
